I could not agree with you more. Putting the scripture in its historical context and trying to understand it as it would have been understood by its original readers and actors is essential to correct Biblical interpretation and it does indeed make our preaching and teaching come to life.

Eternity in Their Hearts is a fantastic book, and sadly not one that I often hear discussed. That story about the Athenian affair got me interested many years ago in becoming a better student of the ancient world, so that I could better understand God's Word. Sometimes, I feel that Christian teachers do no spend enough time studying extra-biblical sources. Even though a thorough understanding of ancient history, languages, customs, etc. is not "necessary" to effectively living the Christian life, I feel it is the duty of the preacher to study these things out, so as to help the Scriptures to come alive when presented from behind our pulpits and lecterns.

Hi Kat-Renee, I'm glad you found my blog too. I hope your drama goes well. If you like Eternity in Their Hearts you might check out a couple of Richardson's other books: Peace Child and Lord's of the Earth.

P. S. Eternity In Their Hearts is one the best foundational books I have ever read. Haven't read it in years and don't have a copy right now... Glad I stumbled across your blog. Am going to check Amazon right now for a used copy.

Hi Joel. The first I read about this incident was in Don Richardson's book, Eternity in Their Hearts. He starts his book with this account.

Mark:

Where did you get the reference materials that give the extrabiblical background for Acts 17? From Richardson's book, Peace Child? Another source. I read a great articel on this years ago but cannot locate the source, can you be of help?

Very good background! Its amazing how the Bible can make so much sense when properly understood. There is so much we don't understand. But we can assume that there are unknowns which we can hunt down, just like they assumed there was an unknown God whom they could call out to. All who don't know Him but desire to can also call out to Him.
